Baumann has been drawing since his earliest childhood, and was confident he should be a painter. In his loft, some charcoal sketches, landscapes in oil show that at 13, he could spontaneously master the most reliable techniques.

He has been a student at "Art Décoratifs" school in Paris from 1939 to 1945, so as to practice all the disciplines in Plastics Arts. His job as a serigraphist gave him practical skill and confirmed him in his vocation and vow to déevote his personal life to painting.

From 1945, his tapestries made a success, several pieces were woven in Gobelins and Aubusson manufactures, and since often exhibited all over the world. He has tried to sculpt and filled gorgeous catalogues with art photographs, but in no way was he ever teared away from his inner necessity to carry on a research in painting;

Wecan see here some of his recent productions, as he uses very big size and small ones as well.

Baumann's work has crossed all the movements of our time: classicism, fauvism, constructivism, dreams, deconstruction of space... not to say that he is a follower, in contradistinction, he is one who goes on his own evolution, and was often a leader in these tendancies.

He has always been trying to get free from any figurative obstacle, to let the expression of the subtile

miracle of light appear at its best. He could slowly use less and less formal attire, purify the palette, experience new materials, get a freer analysis of the tangible world to feel independant towards the object in order to invest himself more closely in the true aim, mainly dealing with a spiritual stake.

Baumann wishes to simplify, purify, take off all which could be only nice, theatrical, or glittering, to express what life deeply is, so that "the painter's witness would be similar to a strong and powerfull song, rather uncouth, full of light love", which could give intensity and freshness to his work inspired in the subtle way.

For Baumann, the use of large coatings of paste to reveale transparent luminescences, gives him the ability to express the inner beauty of vibrating energy.

Humility and awareness, loving devotion to life and Being, so is Marc Baumann.

Rocher aux empreintes




Avec le rocher aux empreintes de 1997, Marc Baumann célèbre une fois de plus la Nature et ses mystères.

Au premier plan, de larges bandes verticales suggèrent le rocher dont on perçoit les arêtes et les rondeurs. Empatement et collages - de journaux et de tissu - nourrissent la matière picturale, donnant une densité à la couleur et du relief à l'oeuvre. Les coups de pinceaux tournoyants de l'arrière plan évoquent - quand à eux - le vent et un ciel chargé de nuages agités. Le tissu à carreaux noir et blanc et le papier journal collé à la surface de la toile témoignent d'un passage...à chacun de laisser travailler son imaginaire.

Dans une harmonie de couleurs du blanc au gris en passant par le beige, Marc Baumann prend ici le rocher comme prétexte pour se laisser aller à sa passion: peindre - non pas ce qu'il a contemplé - mais le souvenir qu'il a d'une forme, enrichi par l'émotion qui a travaillé en lui.

Si Océanide III de 1997 est une oeuvre abstraite, elle n'en est pas moins dynamique et expressive.

Une forme énigmatique surgit à la surface de la toile attirant l'il. De cette apparition se dégage une énergie car elle semble être en mouvement: rotatif avec le cerne blanchâtre, mouvement encore avec les lignes du cadriage qui "dansent" dans les registres supérieurs et inférieurs. Tout en restant dans une gamme de couleurs se situant entre blancs, gris et marrons, Marc Baumann a su rendre de forts contrastes contribuant au caractère intriguant et impressionnant de l'oeuvre.

Le peintre nous livre ici le " miracle subtil de la lumière ". L'abstraction lui permet toutes les audaces. Libéré de la figuration, il peut laisser parler son âme et nous communiquer son amour de la vie.
